COTTON LINTER(FUZZ)

COTTON LINTERS

  • Even after the most efficient ginning process for recovery of lint from seed cotton, a certain amount of Fuzz/Short Fibres which is unsuitable for spinning remains on the cottonseeds. This fuzz/Short Fibres is known as “COTTON LINTERS”.

  • The cotton seeds are put through the linter twice and you will see cotton linter for sale as first cut linters or second cut linters. The second cut cotton linters are shorter than first cut cotton linters.

The process involves super cleaning of raw cotton where fibres are extracted and baled. Alternatively, linter is passed through the de-linting machine – where the First Cut larger fibres are obtained. When passed for the second time to extract the remaining short fibres, it is called the Second Cut.

After removal of linters, cotton seed is converted into food for people, feed for livestock, fertilizer and mulch for plants. First Cut consists of longer, more resilient fibres and are prized raw material for high grade bond, currency, low grammage tissues and filter paper. Second Cuts are made up of short fibres to produce paper, low grade absorbant cotton and in the mattress industry.
